Groups

The club runs a group system on its Wednesday evening sessions. Groups are fundamental to the club and allow us to have runners with very different abilities. If you are new to the club please use the pace bands to choose the group most suited to you.

If you run with a group that is too fast the group will loop for you but you should move down a group until you find one that you can run with more comfortably. Similarly, if you run with a group that is too slow please respect the group and slow down rather than expecting the group to keep up with you. Sometimes runners will drop down a group for a variety of reasons. If you do, please respect the pace of the group you are running with! Please do not be offended if the group leader asks you to move up or down a group. It's their job to manage the group.

All groups will aim to run for about an hour though this can vary from week to week. The actual distance will depend on the speed of the group and obviously the faster groups will tend to run farther.

All runners are responsible for their own safety on the road and the safety of others - both runners and other road and pavement users. Group leaders do not have to be first aid trained though some might be. If you injure yourself while running the group leader will do what they can but don't expect professional care! Please respect other people on the pavement or footpath. We do not have exclusive rights of way! If you see someone coming towards you on the pavement shout a warning to the runners behind you and move out of the way of the pedestrian. As you go past thank them and don't forget to smile!

There is also a transition group which is for beginner runners and anyone else who do not fit into the other groups. The transition group will take these runners up to the point where they can join one of the main club groups. Because by nature it is transitory it will only exist when it is needed!

Group Rules

  1. Looping will always apply to all groups. Looping is essential to keep the group from getting too strung out. When someone calls "loop" the runners at the front will turn around and go to the back. You can do this running or walk if you need a break. All runners must loop except for those at the back, which will now form the new front of the group.
  2. Hi-Viz must be worn at all times in the winter months when running in the dark. If you forget your hi-viz please try to run in the middle of the group where you will be seen.
  3. When running in the dark group leaders must make sure that the majority of their route is in street lit areas. Normally running off road is not permitted in the dark unless it is agreed by all the group in advance. If running off road head torches must be worn.
  4. Headphones are not allowed when running with the club, even if on very quiet and one ear only!
