Weekly Round-up 18 March

The weather once again took its toll on our plans with races being called off all over the country. Calling off an event which you’ve been planning all year for isn’t easy but the safety of the runners, marshals and spectators has to be paramount.

Jo Doodson Hall took part in the Hampton Court Palace Half on Sunday which was one of the few events to go ahead, but this didn’t mean she escaped the weather. Snow, cold, ice were some of the key words from her race report but we breed them tough at Running Forever and she slid over the line in 1.56.

The Axe Valley Runners took the tough decision to cancel their iconic Grizzly race on Sunday, substituting a shortened Cub course for all entrants, which avoided the most challenging parts of the terrain. This Polar Bear Cub was hunted down by Andy Staples and Emma Kiernan (both with 1.16 finishes), Sam Wharton (1.32), Chris Larcombe (1.33) and Lara Bolduc (2.11). The photos show the terrain, weather and scenery as beautiful but very tough going, so well done all of you.

This weekend’s parkrun tourists made their way to Eastleigh, Minehead, Killerton, Wotton, Burnham and Bideford. Eleven hardy members splashed and slid their way round Longrun Meadon with Alison Wasey completing her 150th parkrun.

My tactic of avoiding running in the cold was to stay indoors and do some serious research on the nutritional properties of cake and cider but one of our members, Hannah Taunton, took her running shoes to Dubai where the sun was shining. Taking part in the Fazzi International Championships, Hannah, in her TAC colours, took gold in both the 1500m and 800m in her T20 category of this Para Athletics Grand Prix. Not content with the medals, Hannah also smashed her PB in the 1500m. All that and a sun tan too! Great running there Hannah and great supporting from mum Gill who is also a RFRC member.
